Aaron Vinson and Sarah Ogburn were surely married on the 17th of November 1767,
NOT on the 11th as previously stated in 'reliable' sources (including the one you're reading). m. 17 Nov 1767 Sussex County, Virginia, United States Sources and Information - Aaron and Sarah's Marriage date appeared as "11 Nov., 1767" in both: the Willam and Mary Quarterly, and an Index for VA Marr Records 1700-1850. (Click the links to see examples) Both these records are wrong. It could be one was copied from the other. In any case, someone looked at the faded original record and either read it wrong or copied it wrong. This is the main reason most researchers prefer original records rather than transcriptions and indexes. The date on the original record is "17 November" as seen highlighted in the image below: - CLICK HERE to view the full page of the above marriage record. This is an official Sussex County, VA marriage record the original of which was recorded in colonial times. However this, itself, is probably a handwritten transcription from other ealier, older records according to what I've been told. I have not visited Sussex County, VA myself, but I was told by the Probate Office in Lincoln County, GA that these old records from early America (prior to the 1800s) are now very fragile loose leaf papers kept elsewhere (those that still exist). They told me that these bookbound copies were made from the originals and later re-bound into sturdier volumes. I've seen record books and heard similar stories from Probate offices in Alabama. |
