I created the web page you're reading now to help explain where the name Thompson fits in. In a nutshell, it doesn't fit in. In the course of family history research we propogate errors for years then discover facts -- sometimes decades later. The internet age gives errors a life of their own in spite of our best efforts. Over the years I've been asked by at least 3 or more researchers where the name "Thompson" came from. It came from a pedigree in Maud McLure Kelly's research. My dad had similar pedigrees from Maud. However, the error was NOT Maud's fault. For a PDF file showing this hand written pedigree (which you can view, download, and post where you please), CLICK HERE. Source of the error Maud created the pedigree for my grandfather Oakley Vincent or his descendants. My dad had a pedigree from Maud. The error in Lucinda's surname on the pedigree may originate from interviews with Oakley and Oma, my paternal grandparents. There were Thompsons in my grandmother's family. The Ancestral File database was created by my church in 1983. This was one of the earliest AND largest family history databases in existance. About 1994, I eagerly uploaded my Vincent pedigree, complete with errors, to this database. In the 20 years since then, it has been used as a source and copied countless times. Today this error can be found in many family trees all over the internet. Lucinda Finch was a Canady NOT a Thompson There is much evidence to prove it. - Lucinda's marriage record from Georgia, her birth state, gives her name as "Keneday" and "Kenedy." - The 1880 Census has a 52-year-old "sister-in-law" (probably William's, not Christopher's) named "Mary A. Kennedy." - According to Cousin Faye's research, Samantha Duke, in whose household Lucinda was living in 1900, was the granddaughter of Lucinda's sister, Elizabeth Canady. - Most researchers believe Lucinda was a Canady, not a Thompson. - The "Thompson" surname has never shown up as a maiden name for Lucinda in any records in the 25 years or so since this error was first recorded. If anyone has recorded Lucinda's maiden name as "Thompson", I am the source of that error. Please change it to Canady or remove it. I don't expect the dozens of erroneous family trees to all be corrected but I hope records on Findagrave.com, Ancestry.com, Wikitree.com, Familysearch.org's Family Tree, and others of importance will be corrected. Some genealogies say William died in 1881 but they give no source for his death record.
