(This page was last updated on 2014-11-27) I received the following Email from Warren Power of the Power et al DNA & History Project: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dnapower/index2.htm Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2014 "FTDNA told me back in 2005 that if two participants have an exact 25 marker match then they both had the exact same ancestor back in 1066AD, regardless of surname as back then not everyone had a surname. Taking that further, it appears that if they both do the 37 marker match, even if they have one or two markers mutated, it is still the same ancestor but he has been brought forward in time to say 1300s; and the 67 marker would bring him forward in time again to about 17-1800." I have found this to be true in our I1 Vincents although I'm unsure if anyone has done research on it. Cousin John and I are 4 markers off at the Y-DNA67 test level. Marker Ron.V John Y-GATA-H4 9 10 CDY 38-39 38-40 DYS511 10 9 DYS444 14 15 CDY-b is a "volatile" marker, meaning it is "more likely to change within the genealogical time frame." (1) However, 511 and 444 are not. I'm wondering if these STR markers may contain SNPs that could identify our Vincent ancestors? It's too early to tell but something worth remembering. (1) see: https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/project-administration/gap-reference /colors-y-dna-results-chart-heading/ NOTE: On the FTDNA.com results page for our project, STR markers in RED are considered "volatile" or prone to change faster than normal. FTDNA wording is as follows: ... the STR (short tandem repeat) markers that have faster mutation rates and are more likely to change within the genealogical time frame are coded with a red background. WorldFamilies.net does not use this same color coding but a Vincent DNA project administrator can share a copy of the color-coded results from FTDNA.com.
